Your first task? Read the front half of the Dark / Light Grimoire—every page. Understanding the core mechanics and philosophy will set you up for success.

The Dark / Light Philosophy

This system was designed to make combat faster and more intuitive, so players can take their turns quickly and stay engaged. The less time spent on mechanics, the more time for story development and role-playing—the heart of the game.

The Basics

As the Experience Director (ED), your job is to manage all aspects of the game while collaborating with players to create an exciting and immersive story.

Think of yourself as a film director—guiding the narrative, setting the scene, and bringing characters to life. You’ll track time, environments, Story Characters (SCs), and creatures, embodying them and rolling dice on their behalf.
